“Ecosystem approach to health” (or Ecohealth) is a growing international field of practice, education, and research to tackle a great challenge of international development in improving people’s health, while promoting prosperous & resilient community and environmental sustainability. Ecohealth has been promoted for a relatively long time in many parts of the world; however it has only been more recently introduced in Southeast Asia. Hence, the needs of developing the competent future leaders in Southeast Asia, who will be able to facilitate the further implementation of Ecohealth approach are have to be fulfilled.

The Center for Public Health and Ecosystem Research (CENPHER), Hanoi School of Public Health (HSPH) is implementing the program entitled Field Buidling Leadership Initiative in Vietnam (FBLI): Advancing Ecohealth in South-East Asia” funded by the International Development and Research (IDRC), Canada from 2012 to 2016 . The purpose of the research program is to develop Ecohealth major based on research, training and intergration with operational policy and network connection to solve human health problem associated with agricultural intensification in Vietnam. The FBLI’s research in Vietnam has applied Ecohealth approach to study the health and environmental impacts of improper animal waste management in intensified agriculture systems and offers solutions to solve this issue. In May 2014, in the framework of the FBLI, the Global Health True Leaders Training was organized to provide potential Ecohealth future leaders with neccesary knowledge and skills on leadership and public health. We now invite young researchers to apply for the small grants titled “Ecohealth approach to better tackle the issue of health risks related to agricultural intensification”

Objectives of the grants:

To facilitate young researchers to learn and apply Ecohealth approach in research on health risks related to agricultural intensification in Vietnam.
To improve the research capacity on Ecohealth of key individuals (Ecohealth True Leaders) in different institutions in Vietnam.
About the Call

Duration of the research

6 months (scheldued period from mid November 2014 to May 2015)

Financial support

A grant up to 52 095 000 VND (fifty-two millions and ninety five Vietnam Dong) will be provided for each successful proposal.

The grant shall cover:

Local travel costs
Venue renting charge for project implementation
Preparation meetings
Project materials and supplies
Meals expenses during project implementation
Public relations expenses
The grant will NOT cover:

Entertainment costs such as air tickets, meals and lodging which are not associated with project purposes.
Goods or services for personal use
​Who are illegible?

Applicants who meet all below requirements are illegible to apply:

Vietnamese citizens who age under 30 years old
Willing to learn about and apply Ecohealth concepts
Interested in health, agriculture, and environmental issues
Capable of implementing leadership skills into the proposed projects
Able to demonstrate a strong commitment to maintain the projects
How to apply

Applicants are invited to submit a concept note (maximum 5 pages) to the following contact in section 7 – Deadline and Contact.

Proposal topics are indicated in Section 5 – Guideline for proposal

Applicants may submit proposals requesting funding up to 52 095 000 VND. Proposals requesting more than 52 095 000 VND will be considered ineligible and to be asked to revised the proposed budget. FBLI will award approximately 06 leadership projects, and will disburse directly to the successful applicants covering a period of six months in accordance with the financial regulations.

Guidelines for proposal

Type of project

Research
Could be a research to tackle the issue of health in related to agricultural intensification.

Capacity building
Could be a program of building the capacity in term of knowledge or understanding of Ecohealth for the specific community that play a big role in the sustainability of ecosystem and its relation to human and animal health.

Advocacy
Could be a program that advocate and promote Ecohealth issues to influence the existing or future policy.

Location

Applicants may choose one or more preferred location(s) in Vietnam for the implementation of the proposed projects/research.

Format of the proposal : The project proposal should be no more than 5 pages, and should include the following:

Project title
Project summary describes how the leadership project to be accomplished including project’s aims, activities and outcomes
Timetable, which consists of key activities, the start date, and the end date
Benefits, describing how the outcomes will benefit to proposed community
References
Budget
Contain detailed explanation and the breakdown of the expenses for the leadership project, in such a way that it can be easily reviewed. The budget should be arranged in VND and should not exceed 52 095 000 VND. The breakdown of budget should contain the following lines:

personnel with maximum 10% out of the total budget
local travel cost with maximum 15% out of the total budget
accommodations and venue renting charge (if necessary) with maximum 30% out of the total budget
materials and supplies of project with maximum 15% out of the total budget
resource person fee (if necessary) with maximum of 10% out of the total budget
meal expenses during the project implementation with maximum of 10% out of the total budget
documentation and project publication with maximum of 10% out of the total budget
applicants could add more lines if necessary, however the unallowed expenses should be noticed.
Note: for the implementation of the project, successful applicants are encouraged to mobilize the private or other sources of funding.

Selection

Applicantion will be reviewed and selected by the FBLI committee. All applications are kept confidential

We will not consider any initiatives that already implemented or funded by other sources. Successful applicants shall be contacted for more details.
